Crystal Cove

We spent nearly all day Saturday at Crystal Cove State Park which is between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. We started in the middle of the park and took the trail down to the water. We then walked along the sea shore and to the historic cove where there were several houses (most of which were closed). There was a restaurant on the shore but the list to get in was 3 pages long. We opted to hike up to the Shake Shop up by the road. After a quick lunch which included some delicious shakes we headed back on the trail to the car and went to the other end of the park called Pelican Point. We investigated the tide pools at both ends and found some very interesting sea life. We have some pictures below. This is a map of the park. There were signs like this at all the trails leading to the shore.
This is the coastline taken from one of the lookouts we stopped at along the way to the beach.

Dimitrios had loads of fun in the ocean. The water was very cold but it was a nice warm day so he dried off quickly.

Another coastline picture from a scenic outlook.

In one of the tide pools there was a blue-black star fish. It was about as big as a fist.

This looked like there was an eel camped out in a shell. It would blink every once in a while but other than that it didn't move.

This was one of the giant starfish we say at the edge of the tide pools where the water got deeper. It was a good foot in diameter. It was also extremely fat.

Someone built a maze in the sand. There were several people making different types of sandcastles. There were also a few kite fliers. Mostly the kids were having loads of fun looking for hermit crabs and other sea life hanging out in the tide pools. We only came across a few kids on boogie boards. Didn't see any actual surfers.
