Cooking in the Great Outdoors

The boys went snow camping in Idyllwild this weekend.  It was cold and rainy and everything came back wet.  Not just damp.... Wet.

The group was supposed to leave on Saturday morning but the crazy wind and rain (worse up in Idyllwild according to the ranger) they opted to hold off for a day.  When the finally left Sunday morning they'd opted to make only dinner, cracker barrel, and breakfast.  They spent the bulk of Sunday working on building their shelters.  The one below is my hubby's.  Just enough room for his sleeping bag and backpack full of clothes.

When they arrived back on Monday and I helped one of the adults pull equipment out of his car water was pouring out.  Yes, pouring.  Everything was saturated.  We spread out the tarps to dry enough that they could be used in the parents vehicles so they weren't swimming home.

Sunday's dinner consisted of Dutch Oven Lasagna and Garlic Bread.  They made two different kinds... One with meat for the meat-lovers and one without for the vegetarians.  I am told most of the lasagna went down fast and there were few leftovers.

Lasagna and Garlic Bread...  Hot

Cracker barrel would have consisted of a nice, warm broth with tortellini.  However, the only ones that made it to cracker barrel were the adults...  The scouts were already in their shelters sawing logs.  So I got back nearly two gallons of homemade vegetable broth.  Good thing we have a freezer sitting in our garage for just these occasions!
