Encampment 2010

Orange County BSA organized a council-wide event from November 11 through 14 to commemorate the 100 years of the scouting called Encampment. We decided we would like to go and spend a bit of time. The camp boasted several activities including Merit Badges for the Boy Scouts, Activity Pins for the Webelos, a civil war re-enactment group willing to share their knowledge, Order of the Arrow's council chapter (Wiatava) erected three Tepees for everyone to investigate, various vendors including the scout shop and scout museum, various shows including musical groups throughout the day, food vendors including Carl's Jr., and thousands of scouts, their families, and friends having an absolutely grand time. So, here are some of things we did...

Packing the Xterra to head to Prado Regional Park in Chino, CA.

Dee is ready to go!

On our way! Wahoo!

Dee just before reveille (at 6am). Snug as a bug in his sleeping bag!

Base camp for Pack 645 (which we set up in the dark the previous night). We had Pack 108 on one side, Pack 333 on the other, and Pack 316 behind us.

Our view was amazing. The camp was surrounded by mountains and trees. There were also coyote and horses. Dee said the park smelled and found it amusing when I told him it was "horse pucky" he smelled. I figured it was better than using a stronger and more profane word.

A couple of old bombers flew overhead from the nearby airport.

The archery range was at the end of Rancho del Mar's campsite. It was one of the largest I've seen in a while. There was constantly a line waiting to use it. We didn't get a picture of the shooting range for the BB guns.

Dee was able to put all the pictures of the belt loops with the names. He did it all correctly and completely without any help from anyone. It always amazes me how much and what he retains. Way to go, kiddo!

The Civil War Re-enactment was very interesting to watch. The Union won this particular battle.

At one of the areas of Cub World one of the volunteers screamed when she found a tiny lizard. Dee rescued it and moved it out of the way. The lizard was only about 3 inches long. Other wildlife we encountered... There was a hawk that kept circling our camp, various little rodents and reptiles, and LOTS of bugs. The most intriguing thing was the owl feathers we found between our tent and canopy. When we went to get a snack around 3 pm and eat dinner around 5 pm some owl feathers appeared. Very strange.

The sun set... Beautiful... At night at lights out they would play Taps. It reminded me of the song I used to sing when I was involved in Campfire Girls. We would all sing it just before tucking in. It went:

"Day is done,
Gone the sun,
From the lakes,
From the hills,
From the sky,
All is well,
Safely rest,'
God is nigh.

It was a tough night but I made it. Loved spending time in Scouting with the family. Papa.
Beautiful pictures and commentary. An amazing looking place for such a memorable event, too!
